These bright yellow warblers with distinctive black caps (males) are common riparian birds usually found in willow thickets of the western U.S. and Canada. Lucky are we to have caught a male in our nets on his way south to Mexico and Central America! These warblers winter in a variety of habitats from mountain forests to plantations, mangrove forests, and paramos- a montane neotropical ecosystem occurring above treeline but below permanent snow line. This ecosystem occurs between 3800-5000 m (approx.) and is a grassland-shrubland interface marked by glacial formed valleys and plains with a variety of lakes and peat bogs throughout.
